Success in New Forest National Park Building Design Awards 2017

Pell-Stevens Architects are delighted to have won an award in the ‘extensions’ category at the prestigious NFNPA Building Design Awards this year.

An extension to ‘The Cottage’ in Redlynch was praised for its complimentary nature to the character of the main cottage. The extension is designed as a mostly separate entity, joined by a small glazed link to the host dwelling and not imposing itself either architecturally or structurally.

The main cottage is a building that has been approached with awareness and sensitivity, to ensure its form and character remain. In this sense, the new development is of a considered and respectful design; an attractive addition that enhances the site and the wider area as a whole.

The extension itself features tall, narrow windows to avoid bulk and light pollution, with timber clad walls under a slate, hipped roof. The shape presents itself softly and with subservience to the rectangular form of the main cottage. Inside, the extension provides an open plan  kitchen/dining/sitting space, whilst allowing the smaller compartmentalised rooms of the cottage to remain.
